Laskar Pelangi (English: The Rainbow Troops) is a 2008 Indonesian film adapted from the popular same titled novel by Andrea Hirata. The movie follows a group of 10 schoolchildren and their two inspirational teachers as they struggle with poverty and develop hopes for the future in Gantong Village on the farming and tin mining island of Belitung off the east coast of Sumatra. Background and impact
The film “reportedly” cost 8 billion rupiah (US$890,000) to make and was a year in production. Most of the child actors in the film are from Belitung, and Producer Mira Lesmana explained that choice by saying: “In my opinion, there won’t be any actors with a deeper connection to the roles than those who were born and lived in Belitong their entire life.”
The Bangka Belitung Provincial government declared some of the locations used in the film as areas of importance to culture and tourism in 2010, and provincial tourism chief Yan Megawandi said the decision was “primarily” made to help raise funds for the Muhammadiyah elementary school on which the film and novel’s story are centered.
The film’s local and international success fueled a tourism boom on Belitung, with Indonesian airline Garuda reopening direct service from Jakarta to Tanjung Pandan, Belitung’s capital. A provincial government official that month said he had no hard data on the increase in tourist arrivals as a result of the film, but said that nearly all seats on flights to the island from Jakarta were booked in the first week it was open and that most arrivals were asking about information on how to visit the film’s locations.

The sub-chapters in the book seem forced. When it comes to the end of the sub-chapter, suddenly we are back in the previous series of stories that were interrupted.
In the closing section, it would be more interesting if the author intended to go directly to the Kaaba sub-chapter without having to enter another story, even though that part explains why the author wants to go on a pilgrimage.

Two days ago I had the privilege to watch the movie 12 years a slave during a private screening in a movie club here. Officially this movie will open in February in The Netherlands. I am deeply impressed by this movie and here is my review.
The Story
12 years a slave is based on an autobiography with the same title written by Solomon Northup. Northup (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor) was born as a free man in New York. He is a violin player, lives a quiet life with his wife and two children at Saratoga Springs in New York. In 1841 two men offer him a job as a violinist in a travelling circus. They travel together to Washington. The following morning after their last dinner Northup wakes up in a cell, with his arms and feet chained. He is drugged by his companions and sold as a slave.
At this point Northup must let go of his old life. He is given a new name, Platt. He is then shipped to Louisiana by a steamboat. There a fellow slave warns him to lay low when Platt tells him about his life as a skilled free man:
Tell no one who you are and tell no one you can read or write unless you want to be a dead nigger.
The story goes on, Platt is sold to William Ford (Benedict Cumberbatch) in New Orleans. After a while he is sold to Edwin Epps (Michael Fassbender). Epps is a rude, heartless man who treats his slaves as his property not as human.
With a help of Bass, a Canadian who rejects slavery, Platt is free after twelve years. At the end he gains his old life back as Solomon Northup.
My thoughts
This movie rawly depicts how cruel, human degrading, shocking and brutal slavery was. Some disturbing scenes have lingered on in my head afterwards: how the slaves are inspected by interested buyers, two slaves are hung in the woods, Platt being hung on a tree the whole day long while other slaves carry on with their activities as if they don’t see him, Patsey (a female slave) gets her punishment; lashes on her back until she is severely wounded.
Unlike other films about slavery like Jango Unchained and Amistad, 12 years a slave is very confronting in another way. I mean the director, Steve McQueen, takes the viewers into the daily life on the plantation.
We see that Epps takes Patsey to release his sexual lust. Patsey visits a former female slave who becomes a lady of the house because she lives together with her master. The slaves hum a tune during their work harvesting the cotton under the hot sun.
The images are also beautiful. The camera captures the idyllic landscapes, pretty sunlight through the trees in the jungle, the humid swamps and rivers. This supports the feel of the story.
The Cast
It will be no surprise if Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Fassbender would be nominated for Oscar for their role. Chiwetel comes in every scene. His performance is impeccable. I got goose bumps when I saw the scene where Platt/Northup says this
I will survive. I will not fall into despair! I will keep myself hardy till freedom is opportune.
That man says this so convincingly, word by word, I had to hold my breath!
Playing this role Ejiofor took lessons from an accent coach as he is British with Nigerian descent. Another point for The Academy to reckon with his possible nomination.
Fassbender’s portrayal of Epps is superb. The look on his face is terrfiying. It is cold, degrading, hateful, heartless and mean. This is also worth an Oscar nomination.
Other cast performance is also excellent. Pay attention to Lupita Nyong’o (Patsey) and Adepeyo Odure (Eliza). Brad Pitt plays Bass well in only 3 scenes.
Beautiful Soundtrack
I find the music score also beautiful in a way that I am able to imagine how negro spirituals came to life. The slaves hum during their work. They sing with their voice and clap their hands for the rhythm in Sunday church services. They sing their spirit and longing for freedom but yet acceptation of their fate. I can feel this really good by listening to “Roll Jordan Roll” (available in the video below). The ripe woman’s voice starts and followed by the choir. It intensifies as Platt’s voice comes in. This song is from a scene almost at the end of the movie. When the camera focuses on Platt’s face I can see and feel his anger clearly.

Harry Potter books have been a hit and been more potent since the Warner Bros decide to bring it to life through a movie. One or two changes from the text in the film is undeniable. We all know Harry has to feel one more lost on the last movie because Bellatrix killed his God-father, Sirius Black after they talk about lives together in an entirely safe village far from anywhere. Sure it’s like a thunder strikes on the midday for Harry.
As we always want for Harry happiness, many have hope that everything he’s been through will paid on the Half-Blood Prince. At the first hour of this movie, we can see Harry doing great for his Potion class even beat Hermione, thanks to the book previously owned by The Half-Blood Prince he found at the bottom of the cupboard.
But another dreary, depressing feel once again must we see on this movie as Dumbledore fall from the attic after being Avada Kedavra by his trusted man, Severus Snape aka the Half-Blood Prince. Not many things from the book were adapted. Instead, it almost entirely different. After the movie was released, you can hear some voice of disappointment roaring from some of the fans, including me.

Undead, Unwed, and I also wish I could say unread! Okay so here I think I have finally sunk to the bottom of the barrel to try to catch up and complete my challenge. I do have a bit of a thing for vampire novels! And that said I bought three different first in the series, to see if it would help me catch up and bring me back to target.
Seriously, this was one of the trashiest novels I have ever read! It was OK and fun, but I feel like a complete fraud and fake adding this to the list of books I’ve read this year! But I did nevertheless read it! So it’s going to be added.

Film bergenre horor ini sangat bisa dinikmati untuk kamu yang memang sebenarnya tidak terlalu berani menonton film horor. Karena bagi saya, film ini tidak seram. Unsur komedi lebih terasa kental dibandingkan sisi horornya.

Film ini berdasarkan yang sudah saya tonton memiliki 3 bagian cerita yang mau digarap. Pertama, sisi horor sesuai genre filmnya. Kedua, komedi. Dan ketiga, drama anak sekolahannya. Sehingga menggunakan latar waktu dan tempat anak SMA.
Namun, sayangnya dengan dibagi 3 bagian ini. Menurut saya cerita horor dari film ini jadi tidak maksimal. Apalagi jika ingin menonjolkan sisi cerita anak sekolahannya. Dramanya kurang banget. Cerita dari pemain antagonis tidak keluar secara maksimal. Terkesan tempelan saja, apalagi adanya El Ghazali. Lebih terlihat jelas bagi saya kalau doi hanya sebagai pemancing penonton sebagai target market. Oh ya, dengan latar film anak SMA, film yang masuk bioskop sangat kental rasa sinetronnya.

I saw this movie at a early screening. This movie was great. The best authentic no CGI fake cars or wrecks all, old school real cars getting destroyed and flying down the streets. It was fairly predictable to me though I am a HUGE movie fan over 5000 seen. Still it made me feel the way I felt the first time I watched Fast and Furious! I like how they had no stunt drivers and they trained Aaron Paul how to actually drive the cars to make it more real. They replicated the cars to ensure that if/WHEN they did wreck the cars they could truly wreck the cars with no CGI involved. Aaron Paul & Imogen seem to have great chemistry on screen that sells the story also.

Sang Pemimpi adalah sebuah film Indonesia (tahun 2009) yang diadaptasi dari tetralogi novel Laskar Pelangi kedua, Sang Pemimpi, karya Andrea Hirata. Film ini merupakan sekuel dari film Laskar Pelangi yang menceritakan mengenai kehidupan penulis di Belitong ketika masa SMA.
Tiga tokoh utama di film ini yaitu Ikal, Arai, dan Jimbron. Ikal ialah Andrea Hirata sendiri, Arai merupakan saudara jauhnya yang menjadi anak yatim piatu sejak kecil. Arai disebut simpai karena dia adalah orang terakhir yang masih hidup di keluarganya, kemudian dia diangkat anak oleh ayah Ikal.
Jimbron adalah teman Ikal dan Arai yang sangat terobsesi dengan kuda dan gagap ketika sedang antusias dengan sesuatu maupun ketika gugup. Ketiga orang ini melalui suatu kisah persahabatan sejak mereka kecil sampai bersekolah di SMA Negeri Manggar, SMA Negeri pertama yang ada di Belitong.
Tafsiran:
Dalam memenuhi kebutuhan hidup, Ikal dan Arai harus bekerja sebagai kuli di pelabuhan ikan pada dini hari kemudian setelah selesai bekerja, mereka pergi ke sekolah. Walau dengan keadaan seperti ini, mereka tetap semangat belajar dan selalu ranking 5 teratas dari 160 murid di sekolah. Karena jarak sekolah dari rumah Ikal dan Arai sejauh 30 km maka mereka harus menyewa kamar dan hidup jauh dari orang tua.
Di bukunya, Andrea Hirata menceritakan bahwa Iklan dan kedua temannya adalah remaja yang nakal. Mereka sangat dibenci oleh Pak Mustar, Kepala Sekolah SMA Negeri Manggar. Tetapi berbeda dengan Pak Balia, seorang guru yang memberikan mimpi-mimpi untuk muridnya, khususnya kepada Ikal, Arai dan Jimbron.
Di Film Sang Pemimpi, banyak kenakalan yang dilakukan oleh Arai dan Akal ketika duduk di bangku SMA. Mereka pernah mengejek Pak Mustar hingga membuatnya marah ketika upacara bendera. Mereka juga pernah menyusup ke bioskop walau tidak diizinkan oleh pihak sekolah untuk masuk dan menonton film di sana. Keesokan harinya, Pak Mustar memberikan hukuman kepada Ikal dan Arai setelah mengetahui hal itu.
Film ini memiliki kelebihan dengan menceritakan persahabatan dan rasa setia kawan sekaligus tentang pentingnya pendidikan, selain itu juga kisahnya sangat mengharukan. Mereka harus hidup mandiri dan terpisah dari orang tua, walau dalam keterbatasan kondisi ekonomi tetapi memiliki cita-cita yang tinggi.
Sangat disayangkan bahwa alur cerita di dalam film ini tidak jelas dikarenakan alurnya dibolak-balik, dan hal ini membuat bingung yang menontonnya.
Evaluasi:
Film ini sangat memotivasi para pelajar terutama pelajar SMA, kisah yang mengharukan tetapi menyenangkan ketika ditonton sekaligus menceritakan tentang persahabatan dan rasa setia kawan serta menyadarkan pentingnya pendidikan.
Banyak juga kejadian lucu yang menarik dalam film ini. Penonton film Sang Pemimpi mencapai 2 juta lebih dan menjadi film terlaris sepanjang masa, film ini dapat ditonton oleh semua kalangan.

Interpretasi:
Akting Chelsea Islan (Merry Riana) dalam film ini sangat bagus. Ia mampu memainkan peran sebagai Merry Riana dengan sangat baik. Tetapi, film ini akan menjadi lebih bagus jika tidak ada adegan ciuman.
Rangkuman:
Saya pikir ini adalah film yang inspiratif yang bisa memotivasi orang-orang untuk sukses di usia muda. Hal ini membawa semangat yang baik bagi pemuda-pemuda di Indonesia. Penulis skrip dalam film ini juga berhasil membawa seraingkaian konflik yang membuat jalan cerita menjadi lebih hidup.
